New Research Likely To Help Us See In The Dark Through A Single Injection

Scientists heading cutting edge nanotechnology are right on track to do what seems impossible: the creation of an injection which may allow us to attain visibility in the darkness. This research might just open the doors to new methods of therapeutic interventions. As per nature, the eye of a mammal only responds to a very small range of wavelengths.

Usually, this range is that of 400–700 nanometers. However, the entire light spectrum is a lot broader. The lengthier end of this particular spectrum lies near infrared (NIR) or infrared light (IR).

Mammals cannot detect such type of lights. Usually, goggles equipped with night vision allow users to detect such otherwise-invisible types of wavelengths, the drawback being that the process is cumbersome. Further, during daytime condition, these become saturated owing to excessive light and fail to function properly. Recently, the researchers working at China’s University of Science and Technology as well as Boston’s University of Massachusetts Medical School have begun to look for ways of boosting mammalian vision corresponding to NIR wavelengths by not explicitly using any wearable technology. This work is a part of the new plethora of research that focuses on integrating biological systems with nanoparticles. By insertion of minuscule devices or sensors into the living tissue, imparting new useful capabilities may be possible. In particular, they have used a technique of subretinal injection, which is a commonly used method by many ophthalmologists in current times.

These innovative experiments involve “gluing” or attaching the so-called nanoantennae into retinal photoreceptors when it comes to experiment objects like mice. Once placed there, these nanoantennae are able to convert NIR light directly into green light of the visible category. Thus, without any need for some specialized external equipment, these rodents under experimentation were found capable enough of perceiving all forms of NIR light.
