GPS Will Perform Efficiently In Tunnels Of NYC Through Waze Beacons

Similar to the streets, bridges, and highways, New York City’s tunnels are also considered as major connecting routes, but sometimes, it seems to be irritating due to the complete loss of GPS signals in the tunnels, making the navigation app blind. The issue might remain for a short period of time. Waze— community-based GPS Navigation App—is launching its wireless Beacons, which help improve the experience of navigation in areas with varying GPS signals, across the tunnels of New York metropolitan city. The devices will be integrated into well-known NYC underground areas like the Lincoln Tunnel Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, Queens-Midtown Tunnel, and Holland Tunnel.

The device is set for installation by the approval of both the Port Authority and the MTA of New Jersey and New York. Though the Beacons are mainly proposed for Waze, they are open-source devices that should link with all types of navigation app that introduces support.

The tunnel-based navigation support has already been launched in Chicago, Boston, and other cities. New York is not considered as a small city, and the transportation in the city is strongly dependent on tunnels and bridges, where millions of people require an accurate and reliable GPS to get the exact directions.

Not only GPS, but an upcoming update for Bluetooth would also enable location tracing using the current Bluetooth technology. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG)

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG)—the organization that supervises the Bluetooth standards development and grant certification to smartphones and other Bluetooth enabled devices—has revealed a remarkable innovative feature to be launched in the upcoming Bluetooth version—Bluetooth 5.1.

The location tracking services are already introduced in the currently available latest Bluetooth version 5.0. Bluetooth utilizes the combined services of indoor position systems (IPS) and real-time locating systems (RTLS) to accurately locate the devices and people located within a range of 1 to 10 Meters.
